BALLOON ANGIOPLASTY
Primarily used to relieve narrowing and obstruction of coronary arteries, balloon angioplasty (or Percueous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty PTCA) uses an empty, collapse balloon to flatten or compress plague in the artery walls.
This is usually done via a small incision in the groin, wrist or elbow and carefully guided to the blocked artery.
CORONARY STENTING
Coronary stents are small, expandable tubes that are used to treat coronary heart disease. They act as a support structure to keep narrowed or weakened arteries open, allowing for uninterrupted blood flow while reducing symptoms of chest pain.
Coronary stenting is a minimally invasive method used to keep arteries open and unclogged. In the hands of an experienced specialist, coronary stenting is often used as the procedure is an effective way to ease the symptoms of heart disease and reducing damage to your heart.
Coronary stenting is:
- Minimally invasive with no major incisions
- Performed with local anesthesia
- Usually completed within an hour
- Lower in discomfort
- Quicker in recovery
Before an angioplasty or stenting can be performed, an angiography is usually performed to allow Dr to visualize the blood vessels and examine any potential blockage on a screen.
CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY
A coronary angiography is a minimally invasive medical test that combines a harmless dye with imaging technology such as CT scans, MRIs or x-rays to examine the blood flow and blood vessels.
A coronary angiography may be recommended by Dr if you have:
- Symptoms of coronary artery disease
- New or increasing chest pain
- Pain in your chest, jaw, neck or arm
- A congenital heart defect
- Heart failure
- A heart valvular condition
- Other blood vessel problems
This is a minimally-invasive day procedure that does not require any surgery.
Uses Of Coronary Angiography:
- To identify the number of coronary arteries that are blocked or narrowed
- Pinpoint the exact locations of the blockages
- See the extent of the blood flow blockage
- Examine the results of any previous treatments
